Pictured is Summerside, Prince Edward Island, Councillor Barry Chappell presenting Canadian Aquafitness Leadership Alliance (CALA) Certificates to Barb McNeill and Lori Wedge.  Both recently passed their certification testing.  CALA is an organization dedicated to providing high quality training, certification and communication network for aquafitness leaders and aquatic rehabilitation specialists around the world.  Both McNeill and Wedge agree that aquafitness classes are an excellent physical activity suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels.  Aquafitness classes are low impact as the water cushions muscles and joints, the water offers multidirectional resistance and each individual can adapt the workout to change the intensity to suit individual needs.  Aquafitness classes develop coordination, balance, cardiovascular conditioning, flexibility, muscular strength and endurance.

Certification

  • To obtain your certification you must complete the theoretical and practical exams with a minimum mark of 75% for that specific course.
  • Details about each course's certification requirements is included within each course description.

Picture of Course flow - CALA Educational Opportunities

The Foundations of Vertical Water Training (VWT) Course is 20 hours in length and sets the stage for you to choose one or more specialty certifications. Refer to the above is a flow chart.

Once the VWT course and an open book theory exam are completed, you are eligible to proceed to the specialty certification of your choice. Most people choose to get their certification in Group Aqua Fitness. This is another 20 hour course and in order to achieve certification as a GAF instructor, you will need to do a 30 minute practical assessment (a mini class) and complete an assignment.

The costs are as follows:

1. CALA membership fees: $49 annual fee + tax
2.
VWT 20 hour Course, Manual and Exam Fees: $249 + tax
3.
GAF 20 hour Course, Manual, Assignment and Practical Assessment Fees: $254 + tax

Once you are CALA certified you will need to do the following:

1) Maintain your membership status on an annual basis ($49)
2) Attend 8 hours of workshops or other specialty courses. Note: If you attend more than 8 hours of workshops, you can bank your extra credits (CECs) and use them for future recertification. You never lose the credits that you earn. If you are unable to attend workshops or a conference, you can petition for CECs by completing a "tele-class" or by attending other events that are related to fitness
3) Pay a recertification fee of $15 annually

CALA is an international, educational organization with a mandate to provide high quality training, certification and access to current information for its members and others in the active living community.

Re-certification

To maintain certification status you must meet the following criteria:

  • Current CALA member, in good standing
  • Gather a minimum of eight CALA CEC's before re-certification date
  • Conduct a specified number of post aquatic therapy sessions per year (ie. Aqua Arthritis classes)
  • Pay an annual re-certification fee. Refer to the fee schedule (pdf format)

Petitioning CEC's

Note: In the event that the necessary number of credits are not collected before the certification expiry date, the candidate can petition for credits. This means, CALA will review documentation submitted by the candidate that proves attendance at educational events that enhance knowledge related to aquatic post rehabilitation. There is a petition fee applicable
