Nourishing the Body

Meet Lisa - CALA's Nutritional Advisor

I am a Holistic Nutritionist and a CALA Certified Aquafitness Leader. I am committed to guiding people towards establishing and maintaining vitality and optimal health.

A graduate from the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition, I offer one-on-one support or group seminars and workshops for nutritional counseling, covering a wide variety of issues, including weight management. I deal with digestion problems, allergies and nutritional support for people with diabetes, autoimmune disease or irritable bowel. I specialize in vegetarian cooking. I also offer cooking lessons covering a wide range of topics such as “Fast Meal Ideas” and “Spring Cleansing Foods”. Look for “Tips from Lisa’s Kitchen” in every Wavelink newsletter. To find out more about receiving your newsletter click here.

Currently, I teach 12-15 Aquafit classes per week. I specialize in CALA Aquamuscle and General Aquafitness including deep and chest-deep water. I regularly attend various workshops and lectures to upgrade my skills. I am looking forward to taking the CALA Healing Waters Aquatic Rehabilitation in the fall of 2004.

I have been actively involved in the CALA annual conferences and trade shows since 1996. This year at the conference I am hosting “Lisa’s Lunch and Learn”, a wholesome lunch with a nutritional lecture and cooking demonstration. I hope to see you all there.

I attribute my high-energy lifestyle to finding the right balance between exercise and nutrition, work and play. My days include yoga, meditation, Aquafit, watercolour painting and cooking.

Tip

Food Myths #1
Butter Vs Margarine

The difference between margarine and butter?

  • Both have the same amount of calories.
  • Butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8g compared to 5g
  • Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over eating the same amount of butter, according to a recent Harvard Medical Study.
  • Eating butter increases the absorption of many nutrients in other foods
  • Butter has many nutrients and margarine has only the few that are added!
  • Butter tastes better than margarine and enhances the flavor of other food.
  • Butter has been around for centuries and margarine less than 100 years.

And now, for Margarine...

  • Very high in trans-fatty acids...
  • Triple risk of coronary heart disease...
  • Increases total cholesterol and LDL (this is the bad cholesterol)
  • Lowers HDL cholesterol, (the good cholesterol)....
  • Increases the risk of cancers by up to five fold...
  • Lowers quality of breast milk...
  • Decreases immune response...
  • Decreases insulin response.

And here is the most disturbing fact....

HERE IS THE PART THAT IS VERY INTERESTING!

  • Margarine is but ONE MOLECULE away from being PLASTIC...
  • This fact alone was enough to have me avoiding margarine for life and anything else that is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen is added changing the molecular structure of the substance).
  • YOU can try this yourself: purchase a tub of margarine and leave it in your garage or shaded area. Within a couple of days you will note a couple of things: no flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it (that should tell you something) ... it does not rot or smell differently because it has no nutritional value, nothing will grow on it... even those teeny weeny microorganisms will not a find a home to grow.
  • Why? Because it is nearly plastic.
  • Would you melt your Tupperware and spread that on your toast?
