"The
Foundations of Vertical Water Training - The Kopansky
Method Pre-Requisite Course and the Group Aqua Fitness
Specialty Training and Certification Course have been
launched in Ontario and Alberta thus far. All other
provinces continue to use the CALA Combined Foundations
of Fitness Theory and Aquafitness Leadership Training
Course, Part 1 & Part 2. Any person who has
completed the CALA Combined Foundations course, is not
required to complete the Vertical Water Training Course
or the Group Aqua Fitness Specialty Course."
Safety
Your Safety Is Your
First Priority
Safety for both the instructor and
participants is very important. Safety tips for both include:
Instructor
Drink water throughout the class to prevent
dehydration and side effects of not having enough water in your system
Demonstrate all moves on a safety mat or a
chair
Clear the deck of all items that may be dangerous
to you while teaching
Keep demonstrations to a minimum to prevent
personal injury
Make sure the deck is dry before starting
your class
Wear Aquafit or other protective
cross-trainer footwear when teaching.
Wear good support clothing that breathes
Wear
comfortable and functional clothing
Give good cues to ensure participants safety
Offer participants alternatives
Frequently check participants to make sure
there are doing well or drifting into unsafe water conditions
Participant
Wear good support swimwear
Drink water frequently during the class
Wear water slippers or Aquafit shoes for hygiene
and to help absorb impact in shallow water
Wear ear plugs to keep water out of your
ears and to block the music if you find the music is too loud
For shallow water classes, stand in water
chest deep or at a shallower level where you are comfortable. Refrain from
standing in water that is above chest deep, because it creates an unstable
environment for you to exercise.
Pay
close attention to the instructors cues, coaching and demonstrations. If
they correct your position it is not a reprimand but rather a concern that
you are working in a way that is safe for your body.
Allow adequate space between you and other
participants so that you have adequate room to use full range of motion
Carry with you personal medical information
that may be needed in the event of medical emergency
Slow down if you are getting tired
Work within your own limitations
Do alternative moves if a move is too
difficult for you. Always try before you say you can't
If you need to go to the washroom, GO, don't
wait for the class to end. You could cause bladder damage.
If you need to leave the pool early, let the
instructor know you are okay or if you need assistance
Before going to the deep water, make sure
you can swim. You are responsible for your own safety. The flotation belts
are not life perseveres
Refrain from running on deck
Wear the correct size flotation belt.
