"The Foundations of Vertical Water Training - The Kopansky Method Pre-Requisite Course and the Group Aqua Fitness Specialty Training and Certification Course have been launched in Ontario and Alberta thus far. All other provinces continue to use the CALA Combined Foundations of Fitness Theory and Aquafitness Leadership Training Course, Part 1 & Part 2. Any person who has completed the CALA Combined Foundations course, is not required to complete the Vertical Water Training Course or the Group Aqua Fitness Specialty Course."

Aquafit Handouts

There is a class for everyone 

Are you ready for a refreshing change? Try Aquafit Chest Deep or Deep Water ... physical conditioning obtained by using water as resistance. Muscles will be toned and strengthened without the aches and pains sometimes experienced after exercising on dry land. Swimming skills are not necessary, but participants should feel comfortable in water and be prepared to get wet including their hair. 

CALA instructor's expertise gives them the skills and knowledge to develop an extensive list of courses. There is no end to the type of classes they can develop. Classes are offered based on the instructors skills and certification, pool availability, mandate of the Aquafit Program at the facility and the type of participants the facility is servicing.

The Aquafit classes offered vary from facility to facility. The following is only a sample of classes. Check with your facility to see what they offer.

If you are unable to find the class you need, you might consider asking your Aquafit instructor if they can do a private session at your condo or apartment pool.

There is an Aquafit class for everyone. Each class type will be aimed at a different goal. Some goals might be; muscle development, relaxation, joint mobility, cardio or sport endurance.

General

Aqua Deepwater

  • Perform non-impact exercises such as: drills, cycling, skiing and running-flotation belt worn.

Aqua Shallow water

  • Perform a variety of exercises using anchored, light bounce, propulsion and suspension.

Aqua Combined / Mixed

  • Perform a variety of exercises using anchored, light bounce, propulsion and suspension. Commence the class with shallow water warm up exercises moving to the deep water for cardio and some strength exercises and return to the shallow for endurance and stretch.

Aqua ABCs

  • This strengthening and conditioning workout targets your Abs, Balance, and Core. A cardio segment is included.

Aqua-Stretch

  • Aqua-Stretch is a non -aerobic program of gentle stretching and 'range-of-motion' exercises. The class is held in a therapy pool. Aqua-Stretch was developed for individuals who suffer from rheumatic disorder, Fibromyalgia. However, individuals with various other muscle and joint ailments (i.e. arthritis, hip replacements, etc...) find this type of class beneficial.

Extreme Hydrocise

  • This high intensity, low impact aqua fit class is what you need to get your heart heart rate up and your pounds down! Exercises are designed to develop overall cardio health and endurance while improving strength, flexibility and muscle tone. If you want an extreme physique this is the class for you! Swim skills are not required.

Deep Water Explosion

  • This class will give you a total body workout while your feet never touch the floor! Exercises are specialized to raise cardio endurance levels while improving strength, flexibility, and muscle tone in a deep water environment with ZERO impact! 

Deep Water Waves 

  • This non-impact class is held in the deep end of the pool.  Participants use a variety of buoyancy devices to help strengthen core muscles and bring temporary relief from muscular and joint

High Tide

  • Medium intensity water exercise program for improving coordination, flexibility and strength combined with a beneficial aerobic exercise session. Based on the most current water exercise techniques. pain.

Sunrise

  • Rise and shine with a pool workout. Join the early birds as they combine the right amount of stretching, strength and cardio to keep you going throughout the day.

Water Warriors

  • Don't miss out on your water aerobics workout! This medium to high intensity aerobics class is designed for swimmers and non-swimmers alike to achieve or maintain fitness

Aqua Cardio Deep

  • No impact class offers both cardiovascular and muscular gains-flotation belt worn 

Aqua Cardio

  • Mid to high intensity aerobics for 40-45 minutes is the main focus. Strengthening and toning exercises are emphasized during the last 15-20 minute segment of class.

Early Rise Aqua

  • (All fitness levels)  Wake yourself up with this shallow water aqua class.  Minimal choreography that will suit all levels of fitness.  You control the intensity, making it as hard or as easy as you like.  This class is a combination of cardio and resistance training.

Dawnfit

  • Combination of deep and shallow water exercises using flotation aids and other equipment.

Aqua Intervals

  • High intensity aerobics for 1-2 minutes are alternated with medium intensity aerobics to maximize aerobic capacity.

Aqua Light

  • Low impact, moderate intensity aerobics with 20 minutes of strength training. Easiest aerobic class offered in the lap pool. “Stepping stone” from the warm water pool to the lap pool.

Aqua Motion

  • Cardio workout using a variety of non-stationary exercises to increase the water’s turbulence (thus increasing cardio and strengthening benefits).

Deep Warm Water Cardio

  • Moderate intensity cardio in deep water. Individuals can modify aerobic moves to be done in the shallow end of the pool. This is a “stepping stone” to shallow warm water cardio. Warm water stretch and strength class is the 30 minute segment that follows this class

Hydro Fit

  • The addition of floatation and resistance to the ankles changes your center of buoyancy, providing a great core workout.

Core in the Water

  • Strengthening exercises for your abdominals, low back and gluteals.

Shallow Warm Water Cardio

  • Cardiovascular training, at moderate intensity, in shallow water is the focus of this 30-minute warm water class. If preferred, individuals can modify aerobic moves to be done in the deep end of the pool. 

Ageless Wonders

  • This class welcomes all ages and abilities to join them for fitness and camaraderie. This is a medium to high intensity class that uses both shallow and deep water with some equipment for a total fitness workout.

Rehabilitation 

Aqua Arthritis

  • Perform specific exercises that increase flexibility in joints and reduce arthritis pain. 

Aqua Multiple Sclerosis

  • Exercises specific to MS. Following the class is a social half hour with guest speaker.

Aqua Arthritis II 

  • This class is designed to bring temporary relief of arthritis, muscular and joint pain using slow movements, range of motion activities and flexibility exercises. This class is endorsed by the Arthritis Foundation.

Arthritis Foundation

  • This warm water class is designed for individuals with mobility challenges such as arthritis, surgery or joint injuries. It consists of exercises emphasizing range of motion, balance and mild strengthening exercises. Deep-water exercise is optional. 

Arthritis Aquacize 

  • This one-hour class is designed to bring temporary relief for arthritis and joint pain with movements to help maintain range of motion and flexibility.

Aqua Diabetes

  • Exercises specific to diabetes. Following the class is a social educational half hour with guest speaker.

Aqua Osteoporosis

  • Exercises specific to osteoporosis. Following the class is a social educational half hour with guest speaker.

Aqua Back

  • Exercises specific to back problems. Following the class is a social half hour with guest speaker.

  • Drop-in program for those with joint issues focusing on range of motion, muscle conditioning, balance and posture training. Must be comfortable in chest deep water. Swimming is not required

Aqua Breast Cancer

  • Restore range of motion / flexibility to the shoulder, chest & auxiliary regions through warm water exercises. Use the buoyancy to help relieve the pain while exercising. Good for pre and post cancer surgery. Benefit from the friendship of other cancer patients during social and information gatherings after class.

Resistance Training

  • This class is designed to allow participants to learn the basic principals of weight training, proper lifting technique, machine weights and free weights. Class begins with a short warm-up stretching session followed by time to complete your own individualized workout program. This class is an excellent option for those looking for guidance from an instructor and social opportunities.

Stretch & Abs

  • Complement your strength and aerobic fitness programs with this 45 minute session of stretching, abdominal exercises and even some relaxation. Stretches focus on safe, efficient flexibility exercises for the whole body.

Tai Chi

  • Wake up as thousands of Chinese do - with Tai Chi. Join others in this art form in which anyone can participate and gain physical, mental and emotional stamina as well as balance.

Bones & Balance

  • Gain strength for your bones, helping to prevent osteoporosis and learn techniques to help improve balance

Group Strength Training

  • Keep muscles and bones in tip-top shape by using an assortment of resistance equipment including free weights, tubing, balls, steps and body weight. This guided class in a group setting will help maintain tone and improve strength, endurance, stamina and balance. 

Aqua Arthritis 

  • This basic, beginner class is designed to bring temporary relief of arthritis pain by using slow movements and exercises to improve range of motion. This class is endorsed by the Arthritis Foundation.

Fibromyalgia 

  • This is a very slow-moving class that is conducted in the deep end of the pool using floating devices such as noodles. Intensity of workout is very controlled and the idea is to stay suspended with little movement. 

Water Healing 

  • This slow-moving, non-impact class incorporates stretching and strengthening of muscles for people with conditions such as fibromyalgia and arthritis. Also suitable for people who are pre- or post-op surgery for back, hip, knee, shoulder, etc.

Warm Water Strength Training 

  • This warm water, 30-minute class includes 10 minutes of stretching and 20 minutes of strengthening.

Water Walking 

  • One of the best forms of exercise you can do just gets better in the pool! Use water resistance to improve muscle tone, increase cardiovascular fitness, improve balance and flexibility, release stress and just have some fun! This is a great class for anyone wanting a low-impact workout

Water YOGA 

  • Basic yoga poses are adapted for the warm water pool. The focus is on dynamic strengthening and stretching, balance, and relaxation. Aquatic shoes are highly recommended.

The Wave

  • This moderate intensity water exercise class will increase cardiovascular fitness, flexibility, muscle tone and strength - all without even getting your hair wet! This class utilizes both shallow and deep water. You’ll walk away feeling relaxed and refreshed. .

Aqua Therapyex

  • Aqua Therapyex is the perfect class for those participants who are just beginning a workout program, getting back into exercise after an injury, or living with arthritis. Class is based on slow, focused movements designed to give you basic water exercise skills, range of motion exercise and a good starting point.

Easy Moves

  • Arthritis got you down? Focus: Range of Motion, Stride and Balance, Easing Joint Pain. Suitable for those with Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, and joint replacement. 

Just Your Speed

  • This is a slower moving class that will include walking, low intensity aerobics, strength, flexibility and range of motion. Perfect for students with arthritis, fibromyalgia and those with limited motion.

Gentle Joints

  • A specialized water exercise program designed for individuals with arthritis and joint replacements. Learn a series of exercises to help relieve pain and stiffness, increase and maintain range of motion, and increase muscular strength and endurance.

Aqua Arthritis

  • If you suffer from arthritis or experience stiffness in your joints, this class which focuses on muscle strengthening and physical endurance in a relaxed warm water environment is for you. The warmth and buoyancy of the water can help decrease pain and/or stiffness and help improve or maintain joint flexibility. Additional benefits of this class are improved coordination, balance and general well being, as well as pain reduction and increased endurance to perform daily tasks. Although this class focuses on arthritis, all members regardless of fitness level are welcome to attend.

Hydrotone

  • Intense cardio strength training class using resistive equipment.

Liquid Balance

  • Stretching, strengthening (using the water’s resistance onlu), endurance work, and balance training are the components. This is a “stepping stone” to the deep warm water workout.

Choreography

Aqua Choreography

  • Class similar to floor aerobics taught to a variety of music. Class will include movement,  balance, and co-ordination. Different music will be used to help you experience different feelings.

Aqua Routine

  • Each week, progressively learn 5 short routines that will be combined to create a 20 minute choreographed routine. Great for the memory and concentration.

Aqua Circuit

  • 2-3 minute aerobic segments are alternated with strength training stations for the whole body.

Aqua First Nation

  • Exercise to the beat of the First Nations drums, experience Canadian Native dance moves adapted for the water followed by a lesson on First Nation culture, food and stories.

Specialty

Aqua Participatory

  • For those interested in becoming Aquafit instructors or who want to learn more about Aquafitness. Learn how to work the full body by learning which moves use which muscles and joints. Each week you will be asked to put together and present a short routine based on the moves and principals learned.

AI CHI 

  • The warm water exercise class is comprised of deep breathing and slow broad movements of the arms, legs and torso at shoulder depth. The main focus is relaxation. Secondary benefits are improved range of motion and overall mobility.

AI CHI NE 

  •  During this 15- minute warm water class, you and a partner perform slow broad movements together to enhance core strength, balance and relaxation. 

Aqua Pilates

  • Basic Pilate’s moves are adapted for the warm water pool. The focus is on strengthening the smaller, less used muscles attached to the spine. Great class for those with back problems. Class is very gentle, yet powerful and effective.

Aqua Yoga

  • Standing Yoga poses to strengthen and relax the body. Includes breathing exercises. Aqua yoga takes the principles and movements of yoga and adapts them to the water environment. With the release of gravity the body is able to find the optimum stretch. By using the rhythm of the breath an inner sense of relaxation can be achieved. Aqua yoga strengthens and tones the body whilst relieving tensions and renewing energy.

Aqua Yolates

  • A slow controlled class that concentrates on balance and stability utilizing full range of motion while using the principles of yoga and pilates. Apparatus may be introduced to add resistance and variety.

Yoga/Yoga Plus

  • This class is designed to meet you where you need to be met; from the inside out. All fitness levels are welcome, and we’ll modify to meet your limits. Yoga practice provides predictable and verifiable results as an art and as health science. See how fast you can change your life. 

Aqua Walking

  • A gentle class that builds on walking skills, posture, balance and range of motion. Great class for everyone and beneficial for those unable to walk without support on land.

Aqua Walking Tour

  • Using visualization, take an hour walk with friends. Concentrate on posture, balance, co-ordination, while performing walking movements using the properties of water. Videos will be used to give take us on our journey around the world.

Aqua Chi

  • Slow, focused, moving meditation exercise, done in the water working your balance.

Aqua Tai Kwan Duo

  • Work your core through powerful Tai Kwan Duo moves mixed with basic Aquafit moves.

Aqua Pilates

  • Lengthen the muscles through adapted Pilates moves are taken to the water. Slow and controlled deliberate moves are performed both vertical and horizontal both suspended and anchored.

Aqua Prenatal

  • A water class designed for moms-to-be, training for the same thing, labour. 

Diaper Fit

  • Moms do an exhilarating Aquafit class, while baby (1-2 yrs) plays in a flotation device.

Core Cardio +

  • An Aquafit class like no other! Designed for those who are ready to take it to the next level. Using noodles and other resistive equipment, it is a challenge for anyone who likes the opportunity to test their fitness level. Perfect for anyone, any age who is tired of the same old workout, and is looking for something different. This class will test your core strength and leave you knowing exactly where your abs are. Taught in the safety of the deep water pool wearing a floatation belt, there is no risk of injury - only laughing yourself silly!

Aqua Plus

  • A general shallow deep water Aquafit class adapted for persons who have medically been diagnosed as overweight. Work within your own limitations and at your own pace.

Aqua Stretch and ROM

  • Perform gentle warm water total body stretches. 

Aqua Candle and Relax

  • With the lights dimmed, soft music and candles lining the pool side, participate in gentle movements. Put your stress aside for a few moments while your mind fills with pleasant thoughts.

Twilight Aqua

  • Come "wind-down" during this rejuvenating hour of swim-time, that features dimmed lights and relaxing music.

Aqua Theme

  • Once a month, join the Aquafit program to celebrate a special occasion. You may experience classes such as: Halloween, Christmas, Easter, Valentine, Olympics, Charity Run, Toys for Kids, a holiday destination, Disco or Rock and Roll. 

Aqua Travel

  • See the world. go white water rafting, climb the highest mountains, dive to the bottom of the oceans and fly through the most beautiful country through travel videos while benefiting from the properties of water.

Aqua Home

  • Using the properties of water gain range of motion and strength to perform daily functions. Exercises will mimic motions used to perform such things as washing dishes, walking, hugging, reaching, squatting and stirring, Co-ordination moves will also be a large part of the class.

Aqua Nia

  • Nia moves moved to the pool and adapted for the water. An invigorating and relaxing journey through the water.

Aqua Blind/Sight Impaired

  • Class designed for persons sight impaired. Sight persons are welcome to join and encouraged to wear a blind fold or close their eyes so that they can experience the class as the visually impaired experience it. Sight challenged are welcome to bring a support person.

Aqua Partner

  • Together with a partner, perform Aquafit strength and cardio movements. Equipment may be used to increase endurance or add variety to a movement.

Aqua Family

  • Together with your family, perform Aquafit strength and cardio movements. Equipment may be used to increase endurance or add variety to a movement.

Aqua Swim

  • Half the class will be spent working on swim stroke improvement and the last half on the total body using Aquafit movements.

Aqua Tether

  • An intense cardio and muscle deep water class, where you will be tethered to a stationary object.

Aquatone

  • For those who are pregnant, arthritic or recovering from surgery, stroke, emphysema or other illness.

Super Krunch

  • Distance work for stamina, interval work for speed! Targets abs, lungs, hips and thighs.

Aqua-Cardio Sculpt

  • High-intensity aquatic exercise using gloves, noodles and dumbbells, designed to promote weight loss.

Aqua Sampler

  • Every six weeks experience six different aquatic fitness programs over a six-week period. Programs could include kick box, cycling, ski, deep water, walking, running, shallow water, noodles, equipment, yoga, palates, just: arms, abs, or legs.

20/20/20

  • Work the full body with 20 minutes cardio, 20 minutes of effective toning & 20 minutes stretch. A little bit of everything for a whole lot of results and fun. Equipment may be used to increase resistance.

Youth

Aqua Kids

  • An exhilarating Aquafit class conducted in both deep and shallow water that provides children between 10-15 with a total body workout.

Aqua Teens

  • An exhilarating Aquafit class conducted in both deep and shallow water that provides teens ages 13-19 with a total body workout.

Tone and Tighten

  • Little bit of cardio with a lot of emphasis on movement and stabilization. Tone and Tighten-Little bit of cardio with a lot of emphasis on movement and stabilization

Seniors

Aqua Seniors

  • Exercise while enjoying a very social Aquafit class with your friends.

Aqua Seniors / Health

  • Join your fellow seniors for an invigorating Aquafit class followed by a luncheon with guest speakers on senior's health issues.

Equipment

Aqua Noodles

  • Using the assistance of noodles to add resistance, perform Aquafit moves in both the deep and shallow water. 

Aqua Bar Bells

  • Using the assistance of bar bells to add resistance, perform Aquafit moves in both the deep and shallow water. 

Sport

Aqua Sport

  • Adapting moves from favourite sports such as baseball, basketball, golf, running, skiing, bowling, and cycling.

Aqua Power

  • Aerobic workout using resistive equipment for at least 30 minutes. Abdominal exercises are emphasized at the end of class.

Aqua Velocity

  • High intensity aerobics for 45 minutes, and strengthening and toning exercises the last 10 minutes of class.

Aqua Kick Box

  • Perform punches and kicks in fun, easy to learn combinations.

Aqua Ski

  • Through a variety of ski movements and other Aquafit exercises, work all muscles and build endurance through strength and cardio moves.

Aqua Weight Room

  • Take your weight room to the pool and use resistance and speed to increase work. Develop your muscles through multiple exercises that focus on specific muscles.

Aqua Team

  • Add Aquafit to your team training schedule. Participate in a customized Aquafit team based on your team's requirements. Add Aquafitness to your cross-training schedule.

Aqua Running

  • A deep water tethered class that will push your heart. A safe way to run without the impact of outdoor run. Will utilize interval and distance runs.

Aqua Cycling

  • A deep water class using variations of the cycling move and tempos. Build endurance and strong core and leg muscles.

Aqua Super Cycling

  • Running in varied intervals, depths and distances for maximum performance.

Aqua Spin

  • 90-100% in the deep water. This is a class designed to strengthen the core stabilizer muscles & to get people moving on different planes of motion. It incorporates more than the spin motion, it includes water running, seated chair moves, muscle strength & endurance components. Anyone training for triathlons or who needs to water run as a from of cross training, these 2 deep water classes are for you

Aqua Muscle

  • Concentrating on the major muscle groups, this class will build muscle endurance and strength.

Aqua Golf

  • Use the resistance of water to develop a strong controlled swing while working on your balance, stability and strong leg muscles.

Aqua Circuit

  • Using stations around the pool with varying exercises and equipment, work the total body building muscle strength and endurance.

Aqua Boot Camp

  • Intense Aquafit class for the conditioned person. Push your body to the limit.

Aqua Triathlon

  • Participate in a one hour triathlon made up of ski, cycling and running movements at various tempos and combinations.

Elite Swim/Aqua Workout

  • A class for endurance swimmers, triathletes and master swimmers. Group workouts involving 1,500-4,000 yard distances.

Splash and Dash

  • Total metabolic burner with 20 minutes on the stationary bikes followed by 25 minutes of shallow water exercise. Get the heart pumping!

Dance

Aqua Youth Dance

  • Class aimed at you. The class is based on moves from popular dances and exercise moves.

Aqua Belly Dance

  • Take the relaxing sensual Belly Dancing moves to the water.

Aqua Square Dance

  • Set to square dance music at a slower pace to utilize the benefits of turbulence. Moves are called by a professional square dance caller. Bring a cowboy hat and your great voices.

Aqua Line Dance

  • A lively fun class of popular line dance moves adapted for the water. Great for all ages.

Aqua Dance

  • An exhilarating Aquafit class for those who love to dance but are unable to because of various medical limitations. Movements are taken from a variety of dances and adapted for water.
